The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is calling all French-speaking journalists passionate about environmental issues to apply for its upcoming training workshop. This intensive program, held from September 2nd to 6th, 2024, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, equips journalists with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively report on desertification, land degradation, and drought (DLDD) challenges, while amplifying the voices of those most affected.

Building Capacity for Informed Environmental Reporting
The UNCCD recognizes the critical role journalists play in raising awareness about pressing environmental issues. This workshop specifically targets French-speaking journalists covering the African continent, empowering them to become champions for sustainable land management (SLM) practices. Through a combination of expert presentations, interactive discussions, and field visits, participants will gain a deeper understanding of:
- The Science Behind DLDD: Explore the causes and consequences of desertification, land degradation, and drought, equipping journalists with the scientific foundation to accurately report on these complex issues.
- Sustainable Land Management Solutions: Discover innovative and effective strategies for combating DLDD, showcasing success stories and best practices across Africa.
- The Role of Local Communities: Gain valuable insights into the experiences and perspectives of communities on the frontlines of DLDD challenges, fostering empathy and ensuring inclusive reporting.
- Effective Storytelling Techniques: Learn from media professionals how to craft compelling narratives that capture audiences’ attention, spark dialogue, and inspire action towards a more sustainable future.

The workshop will be held alongside the 20th African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between journalists and environmental policymakers. This unique opportunity allows participants to gain direct access to key decision-makers and understand the regional strategies being developed to address DLDD challenges.

Funding and Application Details
The UNCCD is committed to supporting the professional development of journalists dedicated to environmental issues. The workshop offers a fully funded experience, covering travel and accommodation costs for successful applicants.
Journalists interested in applying should submit their complete application packages, including a CV and a sample of their work, by July 21st, 2024, to press@unccd.int with the subject line “Candidature pour l’atelier d’Abidjan.”
